You might be thinking I am crazy and asking yourself how in the world is a denim jacket office appropriate? Well hear me out on this one before you judge! I may not work a 9-5 like I once used to, but I still know my stuff! (or at least I like to think I do)! I get so fed up with seeing the same boring office work suits or the slacks or women.
I was lucky that my job had leeway when it came to work attire and we had casual Thursdays AND Fridays. But needless to say I always pushed the boundaries on what I could wear to work. Here are three things to keep in mind when revamping your work wardrobe.
- Think outside the box. Play with patterns and textures ESPECIALLY if your work is strict on dress code. You don’t have to always wear black slacks or a black pencil skirt. Speaking of pencil skirts and slacks, I think I threw all mine away because I was just so sick of the same thing over and over again. Instead, opt for something with lace or maybe even a tweed jacket. When you do choose to mix prints I would do no more than two. We don’t want you to look like circus clown now do we?
- Go for a monochromatic look like this. Notice how incredibly chic she looks. And yes, this is totally work appropriate! You don’t have to wear skin-tight pencil skirts and suits all the time, which brings me to my next point…
- Try a menswear inspired look like this. You don’t have to go all out. Rethink your trousers. If you’re not into loafers, you can go for a sleek pair of heels.
I would talk to your HR department and get a list of what absolutely can not be worn. Then go to your closet and reevaluate what works and doesn’t. Last but not least, have fun with the clothes in your closet and work it girl! You got this, you da boss! (insert pound it emoji here)

LOVE this look! I would totally wear that exact same outfit to teach, any day of the week (well, maybe I would have to opt for flats since the whole always on my feet thing)! Teachers have it a little more relaxed but I love the denim jacket for work.
I wouldn’t wear heels if you’re on your feet all day too, especially running around little ones! 😉
