How to Dress The Mom Pooch

I’ve come to terms with—and am still learning to—love my body after four kids. My body will never be what it was pre-baby, and honestly, I don’t want it to be. It gave birth to four little humans, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything—not even my pre-baby body. But the journey to embracing my body, with all its changes, has been just that—a journey.

I debated writing this post because I never want to suggest that you have to hide any part of your body. Every body is beautiful, and there’s no need to cover anything unless it makes you feel good. But as a Personal Stylist in Houston, Texas, I also know the power of clothing. The right pieces can make you feel confident, bold, and powerful. Personal styling isn’t about hiding—it’s about learning how to dress in a way that enhances your natural beauty and makes you feel amazing.

Because I often get asked how to style a mom pooch, I’m sharing a few ways that might help you feel more comfortable and confident. These wardrobe styling tips aren’t about disguising anything; they’re about embracing your body and choosing outfits that make you feel your best.

Elly Brown wears paper-bag pants from Target with a knitted top and sandals

Paper Bag Trousers;

I swear by anything high-waisted! High-waisted trousers and paper bag pants have become a go-to for me because they create a flattering silhouette and define the waist. If you’re shopping for these styles, pay attention to the fabric and fit—too much bulk can make the look feel sloppy. As a Houston wardrobe consultant, I always recommend well-structured high-waisted pieces to elevate an outfit

A-Line Midi Dress;

Dresses with a cinched waist are a game changer! They naturally create an hourglass shape and are easy to accessorize with a waist belt to define your curves even more. If you’re looking for an effortless way to enhance your figure, adding a belt to an A-line dress is a simple but effective styling trick.

Belted Blazer & Slip Skirt;

Yes, more waist belts! Layering a belted blazer over a slip skirt creates a sleek, tailored look that highlights the waist. You can see how much of a difference this styling technique makes in my IGTV video below! I love helping clients incorporate structured layers into their outfits for a polished yet effortless vibe.

Elly Brown wears high-waisted flared denim from J.Crew

High Waisted Flared Denim;

Also, in the IGTV below, high waisted denim. I love the high waisted button up denim because I feel like they offer a bit more support. I’ve mentioned on social that some of my favorite high waisted denim have been from Madewell (11′ inseam), Abercrombie (mom jeans), J.Crew, and American Eagle.
